Goodbye Candlesticks

Goodbye, linen napkins
with matching tablecloth
hand-stitched by ladies              candlestick

mothers and grandmothers
with so much to do
yet
so much patience

Making time
to craft beauty

They must be washed gently
ironed with steam
(not too hot)

folded

corners matching, then
carefully tucked away

forever

from now on.

The candlesticks are sooty
tarnished
ugly

We have
colorful candles that smell like apples and rain!

They don’t fit
in those

We have paper towels
and plastic plates.

We go out for food.

We have no room for you.

There is no place for you
here,

in our lives
